Organist and Director of Music Search

Saint Andrew’s is a vibrant congregation in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Highland Park  with a long history of making and hosting excellent music.  Our new Organist and Director of Music will be a musician who is passionate about nurturing the spiritual life of the congregation and bringing out the best in our dedicated choir. Our music is grounded in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition and enriched by our E.M. Skinner organ (built in 1912, rebuilt in 1999).

The Organist and Director of Music will:

  1. Oversee a program of music for St. Andrew’s Church to enable faithful Christian worship, to build community within the congregation, and to support the outreach and mission of the congregation into the broader community.

  2. Be a dynamic leader who is passionate and joyful about nurturing the musical skills of the congregation as well as the choir.

  3. Work collaboratively and under the direction of the Rector as the Canonical authority in matters pertaining to liturgy.

  4. Provide music for one service each Sunday (presently and normally held at 10 am) and, during the “main season” (the academic year, beginning at Labor Day Weekend and concluding Memorial Day Weekend) direct our volunteer choir.

  5. Hold weekly rehearsals with the choir sufficient to provide a reasonable level of preparation and quality choral performance. Ordinarily, rehearsals will occur each Thursday evening and Sunday morning.

  6. Provide musical leadership for special services, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, The Great Vigil of Easter, and other occasional services of Holy Eucharist, Evensong, or Compline as such services are scheduled.

  7. Arrange for substitutes (to be approved by the Rector) should they not be  present on any given Sunday due to illness or other weighty cause, submitting requests for planned vacation in advance.

  8. Provide for appropriate musical accompaniment at pastoral services like weddings and funerals at additional compensation and provide for substitutes in their stead when they are unavailable. All terms of such collaboration are subject to the approval of the Rector.

  9. Be responsible for recruiting and supervising occasional guest instrumentalists or singers, with the proviso that all such appointments are made on the recommendation of the Rector.

  10. Be the principal staff liaison to community music partners who desire collaboration with our musical program or presenting music at St Andrew’s.

  11. Manage copyright permissions and see to it that applicable laws are followed both in our streamed services and printed resources.

  12. Oversee organ and piano maintenance in collaboration with the Rector and St Andrew’s Property team, while recognizing that estimated costs for repairs must be authorized by the Treasurer before being scheduled.

The position of  Organist and Director of Music of  St. Andrew’s is a salaried employment position at a quarter time level of 12 hours per week or 624 hours per year.  Given the nature of administrative, pastoral, and programmatic responsibilities, the work of the Organist and Director of Music may result in an average above 12 hours per week during the 9-month “main season” and below 12 hours per week during the 3-month summer season.

Compensation is a range of $22,000-$25,000, commensurate with experience.
Please send cover letter, resume, and video/audio links to the Rector of St Andrew’s, the Rev. Sara Irwin by email at positions@standrewspgh.org.
